Maybe Should Launch Your Tech Startup in Lincoln Nebraska

Startup 2 Comments on Maybe Should Launch Your Tech Startup in Lincoln Nebraska 248

I’m spending the next 4 days in Lincoln Nebraska for the highly technical business reason of it being a reasonable one days drive away from Denver as my wife and I make our way to Rhinebeck New York.  Literally I used Google Maps to find the best way to drive 1800 miles back to New York and Lincoln was around 500 miles from Denver so it ended up being where we stopped. This morning I decided to google “startup lincoln nebraska” and see if there was anything at all here that would pass for some semblance of a tech scene and was surprised to find it in fact has one.

With a bit of searching I was able to find a relatively decent tech scene with admirable software companies, a Startup Accelerator, and even a co working space.  It’s not San Francisco, but I would argue there’s nothing wrong with that.

Beyond this apparently NerdWallet ranked Lincoln the 3rd best city in the US for young people to start a small business.  When most people think about starting a tech venture they immediately assume this means a “startup” which will require a lot of funding and assistance that many times you can only find in major tech centers, but if you’re thinking about starting a tech “business” places like Lincoln may make a lot of sense. Cost of living is low, people are genuinely nice, and frankly the local business community may be much more supportive because they know their success depends on the local economy growing.

I would take NerdWallet’s ranking with a grain of salt, but it should give you some measure of comfort in knowing that even if you don’t live in California it doesn’t mean you can’t try to launch your tech endeavor. (Keep in mind is run out of a travel trailer with a MacBook Pro, Note 4 and a Cloud Server.)

I am Eli "the Computer Guy" and have been in the tech industry for approx. 20 years doing all kinds of odd projects. I started as an electronics tech in the US Army, worked in corporate IT during the IT Boom, was an individual consultant and grew my tech shop to have numerous full time employees and supported small business clients with computer repair/ server maintenance/ web development/ surveillance systems/ telephone systems until the great recession. After that I started creating video training on all the topics I know and now have a YouTube Channel with over 500K subscribers. I am the founder of and my plan is to create a tech "news" site that I would actually find useful if I was still in the server room.
