Oculus Rift Requirements

Gadgets No Comments on Oculus Rift Requirements 58

With the Oculus Rift set to be launched in the beginning of 2016 they have released the requirements to use it:

For the full Rift experience, we recommend the following system:

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer

These specs show that for many people they will have to buy a new PC in order to use the Oculus.  It should be noted that these are “recommended” requirements which means that the Oculus may work on less powerful systems.  I would note that “working” is different than “not making the user want to projectile vomit”.  Having used immersive 3D in the past I can say that sub par equipment can be brutal on the user physically.  I literally was on the ground in a fetal position once trying not to puke after testing a unit for 30 minutes. So if you plan to ignore the requirements just be careful…

I am Eli "the Computer Guy" and have been in the tech industry for approx. 20 years doing all kinds of odd projects. I started as an electronics tech in the US Army, worked in corporate IT during the IT Boom, was an individual consultant and grew my tech shop to have numerous full time employees and supported small business clients with computer repair/ server maintenance/ web development/ surveillance systems/ telephone systems until the great recession. After that I started creating video training on all the topics I know and now have a YouTube Channel with over 500K subscribers. I am the founder of and my plan is to create a tech "news" site that I would actually find useful if I was still in the server room.
