Raspberry Pi Model A+ Now Only $20

Maker No Comments on Raspberry Pi Model A+ Now Only $20 38

It wasn’t that long ago that a $100 PC was considered an impossibility, and yet now the Raspberry Pi Model A+ can be ordered for only $20.  The Raspberry Pi Foundation has decided that with the launch of the Raspberry Pi 2 version they would keep manufacturing and selling the previous versions, but at a lower price.  They claim this is due to the decreased cost in manufacturing of the original boards.

It should be noted that the Raspberry Pi A+ is a very limited system:

Board Specifications

  • Processor: ARM 700Mhz CPU
  • USB: One USB 2.0 Port
  • Video Output: HDMI and Composite
  • Sound: L/R Stereo (via 3.5mm 4 Pole Cable)
  • Memory: 256MB Ram
  • Operating System: Uses microSD card slot to load O/S
  • Digital interfaces: 2 onboard ribbon slots for Camera and Display
  • GPIO: 40 GPIO pins, backwards compatible to B board

Please note that there is no Network Interface and only 256MB of RAM.

Fortunately the Model B+ with 512MB RAM and a NIC is now only $25.

Board Specifications

  • Processor: ARM 700Mhz CPU
  • USB: Four USB 2.0 Ports
  • Ethernet: 10/100 Ethernet Port
  • Video Output: HDMI and Composite
  • Sound: L/R Stereo
  • Memory: 512MB Ram
  • Operating System: Uses microSD card slot to load O/S
  • Digital interfaces: 2 onboard ribbon slots for Camera and Display
  • GPIO: 40 GPIO pins, backwards compatible to B board

Though for $35 unless you definitely know you don’t need the resources the  Raspberry Pi 2 seems like the best bet for most folks.  With a 900Mz Processor and 1GB of RAM it is more likely to provide the functionality many people would expect. (So many of the services users take for granted simply won’t run on 256MB of RAM)

Board Specifications

  • Processor: ARM7 900Mhz CPU
  • USB: Four USB 2.0 Ports
  • Ethernet: 10/100 Ethernet Port
  • Video Output: HDMI and Composite
  • Sound: L/R Stereo
  • Memory: 1GB Ram
  • Operating System: Uses microSD card slot to load O/S
  • Digital interfaces: 2 onboard ribbon slots for Camera and Display
  • GPIO: 40 GPIO pins, backwards compatible to B and B+ board

I started as an electronics tech in the US Army, worked in corporate IT during the IT Boom, was an individual consultant and grew my tech shop to have numerous full time employees and supported small business clients with computer repair/ server maintenance/ web development/ surveillance systems/ telephone systems until the great recession. After that I started creating video training on all the topics I know and now have a YouTube Channel with over 500K subscribers.
