Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 8!

Yes, you heard the title correctly – Windows Server 8 and Windows Server 2008. It is not a play of words here, that’s what I thought so the first time I read it.

While I was going through few articles on Hyper-V and other features, I came across “Windows Server 8” and immediately thought about Windows Server 2008 or Server 2008 R2. On further reading, I felt something is not right and then finally started digging deep into it.

Windows Server 8 was the original name given to Windows Server 2012, very similar to the recently released much hyped Windows 10 (we all thought Windows 9). So if you ever come across the term “Server 8” in any of the articles, just remember that you might either be reading an old article (from 2011, before the release of Server 2012) or it does NOT refer to Windows Server 2008 or Server 2008 R2. It was originally named Windows Server 8 and later released as Windows Server 2012 and then Server 2012 R2.

The reason it was originally named Windows Server 8 is because the development of this Server 8 began even before the release of Windows Server 2008 R2. Lot of relevant articles talk about the upcoming cloud technology, what it is meant to create and things like that. You might find the term “Server 8” being used in some of the older articles with Windows 8 and just remember that it is NOT “Windows Server 2008” or “Windows Server 2008 R2” or Client Operating System “Windows 8”.
