How profitable is game development?

The game industry has a very large consumer population, but is it a profitable industry for everyone?

I am out to find the answer, and this is solely based on my experience of the industry.

As many of you might may know, back in June of 2014, I published Virtual Terminal for Sony’s PlayStation Vita, a ‘pretend hacking app’. This first was only retailed in the USA and United Kingdom. The total profit from sales was about $72.69. which isn’t bad considering I had spent less making the app itself. Over the next months, I had variety of price changes and reassignments to other territories such as Canada. By the end of October, the game as sold for a profit of $319.15, and has already hit $400 if you include this month.

Now, I’m not making a living from this. Most of my profits from software development gets pushed into buying toys and services. I spend an average of $1000 a year on website development, so for my needs, this is profitable. You can’t make a living from this at the start, but like Eli’s YouTube, after a while… you can eventually make 6 figures when you have several products and a trusted fan base.

I would suggest that you do not get into game development as profits for everyone are decreasing. The current highest programming language career has nothing to do with games, Ruby on Rails, and it will benefit you to learn it now as Java programmers for Android are in the 4th highest paying.
