Business with Mental Illnesses/Diseases

An employee with any type of mental disorder will typically not have their disorder affect the job while employed. However, it is illegal to discriminate and deny an applicant a job for their disability, there are ways around hiring one such, but you will eventually have to hire an employee with such disorder to be lawsuit free.

This subject is very touchy to most people in general, but if you are going to run a business, you must fully understand the applicant’s disorder and if it is really going to impact your business. It will not impact your company nine-tenths of the time, but the other tenth is most of the time behavior. Denying an applicant for unsuitable maturity is not discrimination, but it can come back to harm the applicant which is not good for them. We all know business is tough, but if an applicant wants to know why they don’t have a job for your organization, try saying the usual “You were not the person we were looking for” dilemma, and if s/he wants specific reasons just say behavioral relative reasons.

Anyways, you most likely know how to not hire an applicant and how to hire one, but if you still don’t know about an applicant, it is best to get info from someone with a disorder similar to the applicant. For example, I have gender dysphoria as well as many other mental illnesses. However, these diagnosis of me don’t make it hard to do business, but slightly easier because I can sit and be anti-social for hours on end and be not concerned. Depression however may make an employee not show up for days, maybe weeks depending on how she, or he, is curing or coping with their depression. Than it may come to a male applicant with anger management issues in the past. If you are not hiring for UFC or a similar male aggressive career path, you may be concerned that they could possibly harass employees or be harassed.

There are many more mental disabilities as well as illnesses, but they can be beneficial at times and not always negative. Like previous stated, the applicant disability may not even matter, but you can’t; not hire them for their medical condition.

Typical business policy:
It is the policy of [company name] to provide equal employment opportunity for all applicants and employees.[company name] does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, veteran status, marital status, or any other category protected by applicable federal and state law.
