Steven A. Ballmer was the CEO of Microsoft Corporation since January 2000 until his retirement in August 2014. Ballmer gave way to Nadella in February after an illustrious career at Microsoft ending his run as Microsoft CEO when he took over from founder Bill Gates, who has remained chairman. Ballmer later stepped down from the board but remains the single largest individual shareholder in Microsoft. Ballmer owns about 333 million shares of Microsoft compared to Gates’ 298 million, worth slightly over $15 billion.

Mr. Ballmer said he was weighing different offers ranging from teaching university to coaching the son’s basketball team but he does not plan to make any big moves for six months.

In his first two weeks after leaving Microsoft Ballmer reportedly watched 100 episodes of “The Good WifeIn an apparent “a typical glum mood” before deciding what to do with his newfound free time. Since then Ballmer has kept busy, he went on to surprise everyone by buying the L.A clippers and according to him in his letter of retirement from the Board he has been kept busy by the Clippers, teaching, studying and civic contribution. Ballmer, in his letter, said that between some teaching he plans to do and the start of the NBA season; his fall will be “hectic”

Last month, while taking a walk in Washington, he bumped into Coach Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, who is also his neighbor; Mr. Carroll was fired from previous jobs and is now thriving. He told his neighbor he went through something similar and predicted it is “going to turn out great” for him too.

Mr. Ballmer wrote, “I bleed Microsoft, have for 34 years and I always will, Count on me to keep ideas and inputs flowing. I am an emblem the old era, and I have to move on. As much as I love everything I do, the best way for Microsoft to move forward and enter a new era is by having a new leader who will accelerate change.” It will be interesting to see how he handles his new life away from Microsoft.
