Unmetered.com offers SSD Dedicated Servers with 500Mbps-1Gbps Connections

As a “real” geek I have the tendency to get bored rather quickly.  I have a rather bad habit of running after the next shiny doodad, and at the moment my curiosity is piqued by the idea of setting up low maintenance web infrastructure for geeks.  The question is whether I can setup robust systems that need little food and watering that can provide real value.  I’m looking at setting up an open SQUID Proxy Server, an Open VPN Server, Free Web Hosting and a few other things.

From a basic technical point of view the task is rather trivial, but the question becomes, “Where can I host these services?”  Whenever you are looking to deploy a new system you have to ascertain where the bottlenecks will be, and with these types of services the Bottlenecks will not be CPU or RAM.  The bottlenecks for data transfer intensive tasks will be the bandwidth and drive speed.  At first blush when you look at most of the dedicated server offerings they seem good enough.  100Mbps is more than adequate for webhosting and most any normal web app, but in the modern world with so any folks having 20Mbps+ connections a 100Mbps connection could be swamped quickly if a few people started hammering the server.

Because of this I’ve been looking around for 1Gbps options and was surprised to find out there are not many.  The one that looks interesting that I did find is from Unmetered.com.  All of their servers have 1Gbps NIC’s standard, and then you get a 500Mbps always on connection for your server for free.  500Mbps is enough to start your own YouTube with.  Beyond that they allow you to build your own server.  Doing that you can build a box with 128GB SSD for around $94 per month.  I have not used their service yet, but if it is good this would be the best offering I have seen from anyone.image

They have a European and American data Center to choose from.  The one in the US is in Saint Louis that seems like a decent location since it’s in the middle of the country.

The only thing that makes me raise an eyebrow is that to go from 500Mbps to 1 Gbps it will cost you and extra $550 per month.  Frankly this seems foolishly steep.  On the other hand if you are doing something that legitimately pushing out that much data you’re probably willing to pay for that.

I’m debating standing up a server with them soon.  You can check them out at http://www.Unmetered.com

I started as an electronics tech in the US Army, worked in corporate IT during the IT Boom, was an individual consultant and grew my tech shop to have numerous full time employees and supported small business clients with computer repair/ server maintenance/ web development/ surveillance systems/ telephone systems until the great recession. After that I started creating video training on all the topics I know and now have a YouTube Channel with over 500K subscribers. I am the founder of GeekBrainDump.com and my plan is to create a tech "news" site that I would actually find useful if I was still in the server room.
