Carbonite backup software review

Old No Comments on Carbonite backup software review 30

The awesome staff of geekbraindump.com has given me a 1 year subscription for Carbonite personal prime backup service. The service costs $59 and includes unlimited storage for 1 PC.

Installing:
Well, not much can be said, it’s a very simple installation, basically you just need to press next next next…

Backing up:
After the software is installed, you’ll need to select which files and folders you want to backup. This part is different from other backup softwares I’ve used. I’m used to selecting the files and folders from within the software itself. However, in Carbonite software, you only need to right click the wanted file or folder and select to back it up. I don’t like this way, it is very easy to forget what you’ve selected and what you haven’t selected yet (unless you’re using their folder and files icons – which I don’t like) .It’s a shame they didn’t give the user the option to choose how to backup.

Other than that the software is great, it’s been working for almost three weeks and I’ve never had any problems. The main screen is nice and simple – you can see how many files have been backed up and how many are still waiting to be uploaded.

Restoring:
You can restore files either by using the Carbonite software (to restore all your data or disks) or by logging in to their website and selecting files to download (manually selecting a few files). Both ways are very simple and easy to use. You can also download files with the mobile App which is a great feature.

Mobile:
I’m using the Iphone version of the Carbonite application. The App is small (about 6 Mb) and it’s fast to install. It loads up fast and it is very simple to use. Once it’s open, you need to login and then get access to any computer that is backed up under that account. You can see the drives that the computer has and navigate to any folder that is uploaded. This is a great feature to view pictures and files on the go, and you can even download them to your phone.

Conclusion:
I’ve used other backup softwares like Crashplan which was a horrible experience for me. I’ve had lots of problems with their software, we’ve had a lot of email exchanges and eventually it didn’t work in a reasonable way so I cancelled my subscription (which I bought for less then two dollars on Black Friday…). However, Carbonite is a different experience for me. It works in the background, doesn’t take a lot of system resources and the mobile App is a wonderful thing. The service cost $59. It’s not cheap, but for $5 a month I think it’s a good deal.

Pros:

  • Easy to use.
  • The Iphone App works great, easy to use and view files.

Cons:

  • I would have liked an option to select which files and folders to backup from the software itself and not only by right clicking them.

Thank you for reading and I hope it was helpful and interesting.
