Reducing Bandwidth Usage With Cloudflare CDN

What is a CDN?

CDN stands for content delivery network or content distribution network and it is a server setup which allows for faster, more efficient delivery of your website and media files. It does this by distributing copies of the files that make up your website and online media across different servers in different parts of the world.

How Can this help?

CDN has a few major advantages:

  • Makes your site faster in for users all over the world.
  • Holds a cached copy in case your server goes down. This allows your site to have more uptime and users not to get an error message saying your site is unavailable.
  • Can increase security

The Evidence

In febuary I added cloudflare to my website heresjaken.com and on that day you can see the reduction in bandwidth used.  This as you can see is not because of a reduction in visits the visits have acually grown and the banwidth usage is still lower than before cloudflare CDN was put in.

Why Cloudflare?

Cloudflare has a free version which gives you access to the cloudflare CDN network but does not have all of the features. If you want or need the extra features than you can upgrade to the Pro version which is a  paid service.

I am very happy with cloudflare CDN and have been using the free version for a while now and never had an issue.
