[Review] FreeDNS.AFRAID.ORG

FreeDNS.AFRAID.ORG is an alternative solution to resolving subdomains to IP addresses easily.

Their services allow multiple CNAME, A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT,  LOC, RP,  HINFO, SRV records for your domain and it’s subsidiaries, (subdomains).

My two domains are currently pointed to this excellent service,  and anyone could create a sub-domain of my domain, which might be discouraging to you whom fear of losing reputation by your domain. However, illegal missuses are banned quite quickly by administrators of the site., and you can view all who create a subdomain from yours.

You can also create policies to users whom want to use your domain.  If they don’t obey these, usually the admin bans their domain from their services.

However, if you do not want any user to use your domain, you can easily protect the domain by switching it to private, which asks you to approve sub domains, or if you are a premium member, you can hide it completely to other users.

If you don’t have a domain, but run services on your IP, this service allows you to used shared domains for convenience of sharing. Nobody wants to type 74.125.21.101 to get to google.com,  do they?

Who is this targeted for? This is for small business use, or for personal use. I would not recommend this to corporations who are selling goods on their site. The security issues of misuse of sub-domains are high, and it only takes 20 seconds for a customer to download a virus from a subdomain believing you own that subdomain and losing their trust.

How reliable is this service? I had very fews problem with the DNS side of things. I had a subdomain crash when I changed the record while it was initializing a previous change. I also changed my domain department22.net around an hour ago and it has already updated global dns and is pointing to my blog live.

This service is great for being free*, but it does not fit everyone’s needs. You can learn more about it at their site: freedns.afraid.org

Rating: 3/5 STARS

Pros:

  • It’s free

Cons:

  • Security issues,
  • Longer time-out times.
