Microsoft to Cut up to 18,000 Jobs Over Next Year

Old No Comments on Microsoft to Cut up to 18,000 Jobs Over Next Year 11

In an letter to all Microsoft employees, CEO Satya Nadella detailed plans to reduce their overall workforce by up to 18,000 jobs over the course of the next year; with the first 13,000 employees being notified in the next 6 months.

It is interesting to note that 12,500 of the total jobs cut will come from the Nokia Devices and Services division.

“It’s important to note that while we are eliminating roles in some areas, we are adding roles in certain other strategic areas.”

They seem to be seeking to further integrate Nokia’s teams into Microsoft, merging efforts and develope the Nokia X line into new Lumia Windows phones. This path was expected upon learning of Microsoft’s acquisition last September.

Satya Nadella had sent a previous letter out last week outlining his goals as Microsoft’s new CEO and where he intends to take the company. The emphasis on Mobile was clear and this staff reduction may be a sign of Microsoft’s attempt to to refine their approach and create a more significant product.

Microsoft is approaching this in the “most thoughtful and transparent way possible”,with severance pay to those involved as well as job transition help in certain locations. Our hearts go out to all the employees who are losing their jobs and hope they are able to find employment elsewhere.
