BackUpWordPress Plugin

BackUpWordPress Plugin is a wordrpess backup plugin. It’s very simple and quick to setup, does exactly what it should and it’s free. If you’re looking for a WordPress backup solution, you should look into this plugin (it has over 1 million downloads).

My Experience with BackUpWordPress:
I’ve scheduled two different types of backup. The first is run weekly and it backups only the database. The second is also run weekly but backups both the database and the files. Every time the backup is finished, it notifies you via email (awesome feature). If the database is small enough, it will attach it to the email (another fantastic feature).
You can view the history of the backups, see details like when it was finished and the size of each backup file. You can also download or delete them manually.

There is a paid version (premium extension) that allows you to save the backup to different locations like FTP/SFTP, Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Dreamhost DreamObjects, Rackspace Cloud and Microsoft Azure (one time fee of $24 for one location or $99 for all locations – both for unlimited sites). I don’t use it so I can’t testify about it.

Here is a link to the plugin website.

Pros:

  • You can add schedules as you see fit (you are not limited to just one instance).
  • Very easy to setup.
  • Sends notifications when backup is completed.
  • When the backup is finished, you can manually download the zipped file.
  • It’s free.

Cons:

  • It saves the files only locally and you need to download them manually. However, don’t forget it’s a free plugin, and you can buy a premium extension that will allow you to save to other locations as well.

Thanks for readying and I hope it was interesting and helpful.

Nice article! Wouldn’t it be easier just to backup your whole server though? This only does wordpress, which is fine if you are only using wordpress.
    Question:
Is the backup secured, or can the public get a link to the compressed backup? This may introduced mySql injection threats if public can get your backup.

      Thanks 🙂
Katy – I’m not a security expert, but I tried to access one of the zip files the backup creates and I get a 403 error. I also tried to access the backup folder itself and got the same 403 error. My guess is that you have to have minimal credentials to access it.

About backing up the whole server, I believe Andrei is right, this is a solution for people who are looking for a wordpress site backup only. I use it on shared hosting and it’s perfect for my needs.
