iPhone 6 to have a “Sapphire Crystal” screen!

Old 6 Comments on iPhone 6 to have a “Sapphire Crystal” screen! 147

Sonny Dickson has been a very reliable leak source of all kinds of Apple products in the past. His latest leaks feature an of-the-production-line “Sapphire Crystal” glass display panel, for the iPhone 6 which is going to be released later in the fall of 2014. This is a 4.7 inch display panel which confirms that we will be getting a 4.7 inch iPhone.

Popular tech YouTuber  Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD released a short video not too long ago showing off the durability of this glass display . The main features that such screen would benefit us will be:

  1. A super-clear and high quality screen
  2. More durable screen
  3. Different touch and feel

Lets talk about the clarity of this new display panel. Sapphire is known for its extreme clarity and low light distortion. This means that it will not distort the colours of the screen when looking at your content and will result in much better-looking content.

But probably the most important thing that apple is going to talk about at their presentation of the iPhone 6, will be the strength of this new panel. Sapphire is also one of the hardest materials found, right up there together with diamond. This means two things for us:

  • First, this screen is going to be fully scratch-resistant. It will be very tough, or even impossible to crack from a regular drop. This is going to be a big game-changer for Apple. Think how easy it is to crack the screen of a modern smartphone, given it be a Samsung phone, an HTC phone or indeed an iPhone. We have seen major brands like Samsung and HTC trying to adapt Apple technologies in the past. Like for example the Galaxy S5 included a finger-print reader in the home button just after the release of the iPhone 5. And so did the HTC One Mega.  This points that if Apple is to make the iPhone 6 with a Sapphire display, it may be followed by other brands, ultimately solving the “Cracked Screen” issue forever.

  • This will not come cheap. Sapphire is very hard to manufacture and is very expensive. It will cost Apple a lot to manufacture these phones which means that we may get shortages after the release date. It is also very likely that Apple may charge a premium for iPhones with a Sapphire screen, and sell the rest as normal Gorilla Glass. We don’t know much about that yet so we are going to have to wait for more information to be leaked before the official announcement in September.

Lastly we should talk about the feel of this new screen. Since Sapphire is different to Gorilla Glass, it logically comes to mind that it is going to feel different. It is likely going to feel more silky to the touch and allow the finger to slide across effortlessly. We are expecting it to be a fingerprint magnet just like every other seamless surface, so it will not be Cheetos-Protected.

So far, I have upgraded to every single version of the iPhone because Apple has managed to hit that special feature mark with every version (for me at least). A sapphire screen is an excellent selling point but not, alone, worth an upgrade from the IPhone 5s. Considering the way I take care of my equipment, it still looks new when I decided to sell it after upgrading. I’m still wondering if they have an other special, “must have” feature waiting in the wings.

In response to “Wesley Dunnahoo” :

The Sapphire Display will definitely not be the only selling point for the iPhone 6. Apple seems to rely on physical change for every non-“S” version of the iPhone, to satisfy us. So we are most likely we are just going to get a faster processor, possibly more RAM, and the big thing that Apple will be talking about will be “Continuity”. So that will be the diversity between iOS and the OS X and how they will be able to interact with each other. There may be some extra “Health” sensors also to compliment the “Health” apps they announced in WWDC. So we may see a heart-rate sensor just like the one in the S5… but we will see, there aren’t many rumours about that yet.

I have a question about the sapphire display. I am somewhat of an expert on resistant materials so i am wondering whether the screen will stand up to some of the things i like to do with phones, usually i think of my phone, not as a phone but as a partner, i regularly enjoy ejaculating on the glass of my phone as it brings me extreme sexual pleasure.Anyway to cut a long story short i was wondering if this new screen will prevent me from doing so.
      please reply quickly

Lets put it this way, this screen can withstand any sort of wet sticky material 😉

        Sapphire is a wonderful thing…
