Samsung: Exiting the Plasma TV Market

Old 2 Comments on Samsung: Exiting the Plasma TV Market 62

To video enthusiasts Plasma TV’s have long been held as the creme-de-la-creme of display panels. The color accuracy and black levels of Plasma have been historically much better than LCD and even LED-LCD TVs.  The tech is just better, and while LED-LCDs have come a long way, it will be a while before they can really match up to the Plasmas.

Panasonic, the leader in plasma stopped production of plasma panels last year, just a few months after it released PZT-60,  which is considered to be the ultimate television for picture quality. The panels are just not profitable any longer, LCD and LED-LCD TV’s are just so much cheaper to produce. Now Samsung is following suit, and it has left LG alone to carry the plasma torch, and we can expect that they, too, will be halting production soon. With 4K on the horizon,  Plasma TVs just cannot compete with LCD, they are just too expensive to produce.

OLED just can’t come fast enough

My first big screen TV was a Plasma and I hated the darn thing. The video quality was amazing, but it had a glossy screen that sucked due to reflections in a normal living room. The only way I could see owning a Plasma was if you had a dedicated movie room.

I agree that it is a shame that Samsung is exiting the Plasma market. I almost bought a Plasma TV a couple of years ago but decided on an LED instead because of light issues. My family room has a lot of windows and watching during the day would have been a problem. A friend of mine with the same house floorplan bought a plasma and took it back because of the glare. I think that Ultra HD is going to be the next game changer since 3D televisions flopped big time!
