Synology DS414 Diskstation 4 Bay NAS 12TB

Old No Comments on Synology DS414 Diskstation 4 Bay NAS 12TB 24

Took delivery today of a Synology DS414 preloadd with 4 x 3TB WD Red NAS -WD30EFRX. First impressions of the physical enclosure are that it’s virtually all plastic, apart from the inner drive slot cradle, but overall it’s good enough – I would personally prefer an all metal enclosure but that’s just me… not sure on the front removable panel rubber fixings but hopefully I shouldn’t need to remove the panel that often..

Western Digital RED NAS drives fitted are optimised for 1-5 bay SMB NAS devices –  SATA 6 Gb/s 64mb Cache and 3 year warranty – Nice to see someone’s actually thought about the HDD.

Front right panel – LEDs for Status , Disk 1-4  1 x USB Slot and Power.

Rear – 2 x LAN , 2 x USB3 ,  PSU 12V/7.5A connection, Kensington type security hole? and twin 4″ fans – Very  quiet. – software settings allow for a cool and quiet mode .

Inside the CPU is a 2 core Marvell Armada XP 1.33Ghz with 1024mb RAM.

Software wise, the Diskstation DSM software is extremely comprehensive and covers Storage  (obviously), Backup mail server, SMS server, FTP server, Web server, Print Server , AD,  make the coffee server, I think this little baby does it all, Photos, videos, Music, CCTV iTunes the list goes on.  My mum’s going to get one for Christmas, she doesn’t want one but that’s what she’s getting from me this year.

The storage options are also pretty limitless.

RAID comes in SHR format Synology Hybrid RAID or traditional RAID 0, 1,5,6 10 & JBOD, again plenty of options

Personally, I like the iSCSI option allowing your Server OS to see a drive or drives as a local disc making multiple backup copies possible.

For the semi-technically minded IT admins out there this NAS ticks a lot of boxes. The lack of any built in WiFi does not concern me, in the office it’s cables all the way. Overall Synology have done a great job with this range, I have used many NAS devices over the years from half a dozen manufacturers,  for me, this DS414 is best of breed in it’s class.
