Installing microsoft .NET 3.5 from windows 8 installation disk

Old No Comments on Installing microsoft .NET 3.5 from windows 8 installation disk 15

I bet most of you guys thought the only way to install microsoft .NET framework was by downloading it and installing it. Well I had that preconception too until I couldn’t install it on windows 8 and 8.1 for some reason unknown to me.

So what is .NET Framework?

According to Wikipedia, .NET Framework is a software framework developed by Microsoft that runs primarily on Microsoft Windows. It includes a large class library known as Framework Class Library (FCL) and provides language interoperability (each language can use code written in other languages) across several programming languages.

Do you need it?

Some windows applications such as blender (Animation software) will require you to install it. The problem would be once you download it as prompted and attempt installation, the damn .NET Framework installation process fails even after logging in with admin privileges. What do you do? Install it from command line!

The Process

Please note I’m definitely sure this process works on windows 8/8.1 so don’t blame me if it fails on other windows version. I know there are newer versions of .NET Framework but this process applies only to 3.5 as per my instructions.

  1. Insert windows 8 installation disk into your windows computer
  2. Search for CMD
  3. Right click it and Click “Run as administrator” (If you don’t run it as an admin, the process could fail)
Type in the following command: DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:d:\sources\sxs (If you can’t type the command in RED just copy and paste it because it must be exact.)
  4. “d” represents your optical drive letter. Replace “d” with your drive letter for example “e”.
  5. Hit enter and wait while .NET Framework installs.
