Do we need any more Power Cords ?

Old 2 Comments on Do we need any more Power Cords ? 6

If I had a penny for all the power cords I’ve thrown away !

Do we really need power cords shipped with every new PC?

As most new PC purchases are replacements do you also swap out the power cord or do you have a bin in the corner of the office full of the things?  Many printer manufacturers gave up including USB cables with their personal devices years ago ,to comply with their “Go green policy” – yeah right !

Here in the UK, being part of the EU (for now anyway) many devices arrive with a UK 3 pin and a Continental Schuko style 2 pin lead.

From a safety point of view here in the UK we have PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) normally conducted every 1-3 years depending on the appliances’ use and environment.

I know there are recycling centres with machinery that will strip power & data cable down to the copper strands but these are few and far between, around this part of the world anyway.

In the US many Apple and BestBuy stores, to name but a few, will recycle your old hardware and cables. Check out Earth911.com

I for one would welcome PC manufacturers stopping this practise, I have enough cords to keep me going for years.

Given the demise of the Sys Admin and the rise of the sith, sorry programmer, should I invest in a cable stripping startup !

Go and count your power cords – who’s got the most ??

I have been working a lot of projects installing new PC’s and the same goes for monitor cables as well. I have maybe twice come across a power cable that wouldn’t work on the new PC but I always thought it would save a lot of money or labor by not including power, various monitor cables and adapters with every new PC especially in the corporate world. Also CD’s for installing the monitors, years ago I had to use a monitor CD to install drivers but now most install without problems. If you are running a business with hundreds of PC’s being replaced just send a few peripherals not one for each just to sit around or go to waste.

Anyone who wants to send me ‘c’ style power cords, please do, I’m ALWAYS buying them because the desktops I deploy don’t come with any 🙁
