What’s Excel?

I was recently asked to assist a young member of staff in a Call Centre. I enquired what she was trying to achieve, she replied “I need to produce a document for some Sales figures and Call stats but I’m unsure how to create one” I replied “Use Excel” She replied “What’s Excel”

After an hours basic guidance she was able to produce the required figures and all was good in the world…however, it makes you wonder if the rise of the Tablet and Smartphone will leave basic PC skills behind. Increasingly I see staff who comment they have not used a Desktop before, at school they used laptops or tablets. With so much of the curriculum seemingly concentrating on the internet, the cloud and design many students walk away from school not prepared for the Business world.

Are basic IT skills required by Business passing into memory?
