The Benefits of Preventative Maintenence

In the IT world there is a concept that we hold: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I don’t think that I can stress enough how important this is for small business owners to understand.

The costs of proper security, maintenance and backups for computer systems can be a bit high and this is what causes business owners to shy away from even attempting to implement anything at all. For instance, just the other day a client came to me and told me her laptop had been stolen. She had all of the business financial data stored on it and did not have it saved in any other location. She wanted to know if there was anything I could do for her to get this data back. Unfortunately, there isn’t. This is a prime example of the need to have proper backup procedures and safety nets in place, so you don’t put yourself in a vulnerable position with no good outcome.

But what about the really small guys? There are a lot of businesses that are either just starting up or simply don’t have the budget for a lot of IT costs. Well, this is a bit of a misconception when it comes to obtaining IT services. While it is true that the costs of proper IT services can be pretty steep, that doesn’t mean that everything always has to be expensive. If we look back at the example I mentioned, a simple solution of putting a backup of her files on a small USB flash drive would have sufficed. The problem is that most people in these positions already have a lot on their minds. They either don’t have the time or the base knowledge to think of all the potential problems in advance and the measures needed to avoid them.

Even if you cannot afford to have a full time technician on staff or
have a contract with an independent IT Consultant, you should always bring in a professional once in awhile to help you see what you cannot on your own. You simply don’t know what you don’t know. And if you don’t even know what potential problems can occur, then nothing will ever happen until the damage is done. It’s understandable if you cannot afford a lot of the more expensive solutions, but there may be other cost-effective ways to help protect yourself. The relatively small cost of having a Consultant come in a few times a year is well worth avoiding a major disaster. Ideally, you should be able to arrange for a service contract with a local, professional IT Consultant that is very affordable. Oftentimes, they offer low cost or no cost analysis of your systems. An ounce of prevention is indeed worth a pound of cure!
